What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when a person experiences frequent cessation of breath, albeit brief, during sleep.  Many times this is caused by soft tissue in the throat and mouth relaxing and blocking your airway (OSA - Obstructive Sleep Apnea).  Other variations of apnea can occur, many times without the person knowing they're suffering from sleep apnea.

Is sleep apnea dangerous?

It can be.  Not only is your body not getting the restful, deep sleep it needs, your heart is put through excessive stress trying to keep your oxygenated blood pumping while you're not breathing.  This can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure) and can increase your risk for stroke, heart attack, and abnormal heartbeat like atrial fibrillation.

How do you diagnose sleep apnea?

The best way to diagnose sleep apnea is undergoing a sleep study. This simple, non-invasive medical test, requires the patient to wear a monitor while sleeping, usually within the comfort of their own home. The dentists at Breathe Better can get you set up with the appropriate study in a very easy and streamlined fashion.

What People Have Said About Us

"In 2021, I was tested for Sleep Apnea with a take home device that was provided by Dr. Horwedel that monitored my sleep cycle. The results of the overnight study indicated I had mild Sleep Apnea. I decided to postpone any treatment at that time. Over the following year my snoring got worse plus my sleep cycle was not restful. After discussion, with Dr. Horwedel and Dr. Murrey I decided to do another at home sleep study in Early 2022. The results indicated that I had a severe Sleep Apnea problem. After consulting with my Ear Nose and Throat doctor, I decided to try using a dental appliance in lieu of a CPAP machine. My main reason for trying the dental device was for the convenience and ease of use. After four months of using the dental device, my sleep cycle has significantly improved with no snoring. My wife gives the device an A+ for effectiveness. I highly recommend going the dental appliance approach if it is appropriate to address your needs."

"The sleep device has truly changed both my husband’s and my quality of sleep. Before being fitted for the device, he would wake up gasping for breath multiple times each night. It was both frightening and disturbing. The first night he used the device, I noticed a huge difference. He slept quietly with no snoring or snorting."
